Society of Petroleum Engineers membership reached a record high in 2009, totalling 92,100 members in 117 countries, a 4 percent increase over 2008. SPE membership has grown 33 percent since 2005. Read more.

SPE and GKZ Agree to Map Russian Reserves and Resources Classification to SPE’s Petroleum Resources Management System

RICHARDSON, Texas (24 November 2009) --  The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the FGU State Commission on Mineral Reserves of Russia (GKZ)  have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on programs to enhance the global understanding of petroleum reserves and resources. CSUG and SPE to Present New Canadian Conference on Unconventional Resources

The Canadian Society for Unconventional Gas (CSUG) and the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) will present a new, joint meeting, the Canadian Unconventional Resources and International Petroleum Conference, scheduled for 19–21 October 2010 at the BMO Center at Stampede Park in Calgary, AB, Canada. SPE and Society of Exploration Geophysicists Sign Agreement for Intersociety Cooperation

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) and the Society of Exploration Geophysicists (SEG) have formalized an agreement for intersociety cooperation to benefit their global membership through joint events, programs and services. 2009 ATCE Attracts 8,000 Professionals to New Orleans

The Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE) 2009 Annual Technical Conference and Exhibition (ATCE) was held this week in New Orleans, Louisiana, USA, and brought together approximately 8,000 oil and gas E&P professionals from around the world. Read more

Petroleum Society of Canada Completes Merger Agreement with SPE

The Boards of the Petroleum Society of Canada and the Society of Petroleum Engineers have approved a merger agreement that will create a new Canadian organization, SPE Canada, to serve the combined membership of approximately 4,500 in Canada. Read more

Society of Petroleum Engineers Membership Increases to 88,000 Worldwide at 2008 Year-end

Total professional and student membership in the Society of Petroleum Engineers reached a record 88,000 members worldwide in 2008, up 11 percent over 2007. The number of members under age 35 also increased to 23 percent of total membership. Read more

SPE Commends US Securities and Exchange Commission for Modernizing Rules Governing Oil and Natural Gas Reserves Reporting

The Society of Petroleum Engineers praised the US Securities and Exchange Commission for modernizing its rules governing oil and natural gas reserves reporting, which the SEC announced in a press release on December 29, 2008.

“The SEC is to be commended for updating the rules on oil and natural gas reserves reporting to reflect changes in technology, and for using SPE’s Petroleum Resources Management System (PRMS) primarily as the basis for the technical changes. The updated rules recognize the importance of new technologies in making accurate and reliable estimates of oil and natural gas reserves as the industry develops resources in harsher environments including ultra-deep water and the arctic as well as more unconventional resources,” said Leo Roodhart, 2009 SPE president. Revised Petroleum Reserves and Resources Definitions

SPE's Oil and Gas Reserves Committee, working with AAPG, WPC, and SPEE, have developed revised definitions and auditing information for oil and gas resources as they develop from a prospect into mature producing resources. Read more

Industry Organizations Launch OnePetro

OnePetro  is a new multi-society library providing access to more than 60,000 technical papers for the upstream oil and gas industry. Launched with 5 participating organizations, OnePetro is expected to grow as more organizations recognize the industry benefit of having a single place to search for and download technical information. SPE operates OnePetro on behalf of the participating organizations, and funds from SPE's Foundation were used for its development. Read more
